Byrne walked back to the Jeep and rummaged through the back compartment, then returned with a car-jack handle and began prying open the side door. Jitterbug rubbed his hands excitedly, dancing around. Byrne thought about stabbing the bar through the freak’s skull but focused on getting the door open.

“Hurry-hurry-hurry,” Jitterbug tittered.

Byrne ignored him and put his weight into it, finally busting the door free of the lock. Jitterbug howled and rushed past him. This time, Byrne caught hold of his jumpsuit and yanked him back, throwing him down into the snow.

“After me,” Byrne said and climbed inside.

“Okay. Okay.” Jitterbug scrambled to his feet unfazed and crowded into the RV behind Byrne. He peeked over his shoulder. “Where are they?”

“There.” Byrne pointed the bar at the closed door at the far end of the RV. “Behind that door.”

“Let’s get ‘em.” Jitterbug pressed against his back, eager to get at the prey.

Byrne pushed him back. “We will. Calm down.”

The freak didn’t calm down or back off but continued to hover close behind Byrne as they moved down the short, narrow hall. Byrne tried the door. It caught, latched on the other side. He motioned Jitterbug back, then smashed the lock with the bar and ripped open the flimsy door.

The siblings screamed and the three of them scrambled back on the bed until they were huddled against the rear wall of the RV. “Stay back!” the girl cried, clinging to her younger brothers. “Help!! Daddy! DADDEEE!!”

“Daddy can’t help you,” Byrne murmured, the heat in his gut beginning to boil. “You and your mommy and your daddy and…” His burning eyes turned to the twin boys. “… your brothers… belong to us now. And we’re going to do awful, horrifying things to all of you.”

Byrne moved forward and reached for one of the boys, grabbing his ankle. The child went into a frenzy, shrieking and kicking, clawing at his sister in a blinding panic.

“NO!!” the girl screamed and latched onto the boy. “Leave him alone—DON’T TOUCH HIM!!”

“I told you,” Byrne breathed heavily, maintaining his grip. “He’s mine now—”

Jitterbug chomped down on his arm, teeth tearing into his flesh. Byrne yelled and jerked his arm back, releasing the child. The boy scrambled away, drawing his feet up underneath him as he sobbed uncontrollably against his sister.

“Let go,” Byrne ordered Jitterbug who finally unlatched and stared at him, licking his bloody lips. Byrne jabbed the bar in his face. “Don’t ever bite me again.” His arm throbbed and blood trickled down his hand, dripping off his fingers.

Jitterbug slinked around the side of the bed, closer to the children. The three siblings gasped and scooted away from him. “I want the boys,” Jitterbug told him.

“You’re just along for the ride,” Byrne said. “You get what we give you.”

Shaking his head, Jitterbug glared at Byrne. “Mine,” he growled.

“You can have one,” Byrne said. “And I get one.”

“No.” Jitterbug bared his teeth. “You’ll hurt them… make them ugly.”

“I saw what you did to the deputy,” Byrne spoke low.
